EMPOWERING

URBAN GROWTH

SRINA Tea House, based in Kenmore, Ohio, reflects Worldview Development USA's vision of the Global Village. Taking a holistic approach to sustainability by focusing on economic, environmental, and personal health on a global scale, the Tea House aims to empower the local Kenmore community by creating accessible economic, health and wellness opportunities while creating direct ties to eco-responsible farms in Sri Lanka.

SRINA's mission was born from founder Monaqui Porter-Young’s perspective on the need for a change in how we view healthy living and global sustainability initiatives. Believing that sustainability too often focuses on just environmental justice and climate change -- which is only one part of the larger story of sustainability -- she set out to build a sustainable business centered on community support and collaboration.

This approach was inspired by the local Sri Lankan culture and the women farmers, who are uplifting and supporting their community through their work on Paradise Farms. Starting with 18 farmers, Paradise Farms has evolved into a dedicated team committed to improving the lives of its producers and consumers. Further, the Farm has an Eco-Tourism component, which promotes environmental conservation, further supports the local community, and provides travelers with immersive experiences in the country’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes.  After spending time in Sri Lanka learning the art of tea farming from local farmers at Paradise Farms, she sought to build a sustainable business centered on community support and collaboration, and that could answer a simple question: “how can we help each other?”

Through investing in people, fostering economic development, and community engagement through initiatives such as wellness education, activities for the community’s seniors, and hiring and training local single mothers as their workforce, the SRINA Tea House has become a cornerstone of the Kenmore community. The SRINA Tea House not only provides a healthy eating choice in an area defined as a food desert, it also serves as a community meeting place enhancing community well-being by providing access to nutritious food, fostering social connections, and empowering local residents to engage in discussions about health and sustainability.

Porter-Young describes SRINA Tea House as a venture prioritizing local health through healthy tea and global partnerships.
